In a world often marked by harshness and judgment, God calls us to a higher standard—to clothe ourselves with tender mercies. Colossians 3:12 reminds us that as God’s chosen people, we are to display compassion, kindness, and mercy in every area of our lives. This invitation is not just about an outward show of kindness but a deep, inner transformation that reflects the heart of Christ.

Today’s Scripture:
“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering.” — Colossians 3:12 (NKJV)

The Call to Put on Mercy

Mercy is at the core of who God is. Throughout the Bible, we see God’s abundant mercy toward His people, even when they didn’t deserve it. As His followers, we are called to extend that same mercy to others. Colossians 3:12 uses the phrase “put on” to indicate that mercy is something we must intentionally choose to wear, like clothing. Just as we choose our outfits each day, we must also choose to live with compassion and mercy towards others, reflecting God’s love in all that we do.

The Power of Compassion

When we put on tender mercies, we are choosing to live with a heart of compassion. Compassion allows us to see beyond our own needs and notice the struggles and pain of others. In Matthew 9:36, we see Jesus moved with compassion for the crowds, “because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.” Jesus’ heart for the broken and lost reminds us that compassion is more than just a feeling—it’s a call to action. It compels us to love others deeply and serve them with kindness and understanding.

Living Out Tender Mercies

  1. Show Grace in Everyday Interactions: Tender mercy means showing grace, even when it’s hard. In moments of frustration or misunderstanding, choose to respond with kindness rather than reacting out of anger. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” In every interaction, seek to reflect God’s grace and patience.
  2. Seek to Understand Before Judging: Mercy involves seeing the world through someone else’s eyes. Rather than rushing to judgment, take the time to listen and understand the struggles others are facing. James 1:19 urges us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.” Compassion grows when we take time to truly understand the needs of those around us.
  3. Forgive Freely: One of the greatest expressions of mercy is forgiveness. Just as God has forgiven us, we are called to forgive others. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” Forgiveness releases the hold that bitterness has over us and allows God’s love to flow through us.
  4. Extend Mercy to Yourself: Often, we can be our own harshest critics. But God’s mercy extends not only to others but also to us. Embracing God’s forgiveness and grace allows us to live free from the burden of guilt and shame. As you put on tender mercies towards others, don’t forget to show mercy to yourself, recognizing that God’s grace is sufficient for your weaknesses.

The Fruit of a Merciful Heart

A heart clothed in tender mercies brings peace, unity, and healing to those around it. When we live with compassion, we create a space where others feel valued and loved. This kind of mercy transforms relationships and builds a community rooted in God’s love. Colossians 3:13 goes on to encourage us to “bear with one another, and forgive one another,” showing us that mercy is key to maintaining strong, loving relationships.

Conclusion:
God calls us to clothe ourselves with tender mercies, choosing compassion, kindness, and grace in every aspect of our lives. As Colossians 3:12 reminds us, we are His chosen people, and our lives should reflect His heart of mercy. By showing grace in our interactions, seeking to understand others, forgiving freely, and extending mercy to ourselves, we embody the love of Christ. Let us daily choose to wear the garment of mercy, bringing healing and hope to those around us.

Prayer:
Lord, help us to put on tender mercies each day. Soften our hearts to see the needs of others and to respond with compassion and kindness. Teach us to forgive as You have forgiven us, and may we reflect Your love in all that we do. Amen.
