When Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about the necessity of being born again, He introduced a profound truth: as believers, we are not just flesh and blood—we are spirit beings. This spiritual transformation defines our new identity in Christ. Our lives are no longer governed by the natural world but by the Spirit of God who dwells within us. But how do we live out this truth on a daily basis? What does it mean to fully embrace our identity as spirit beings?

Today’s Scripture

“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” – John 3:6 (NKJV)

Understanding Your Spiritual Birth

In John 3, Jesus explains the difference between the natural birth and the spiritual birth. The physical body is born through natural means, but the spirit is born through the work of the Holy Spirit. This spiritual rebirth occurs when we place our faith in Christ, and at that moment, we become spirit beings.

This new identity is not a distant concept—it is the core of who we are as believers. We are no longer defined solely by our physical existence. Instead, we are spiritual beings, with eternal life and a divine connection to God through His Spirit.

Born of the Spirit

To be “born of the Spirit” means that our true essence is no longer tied to the limitations of the flesh. We are no longer enslaved by the desires and weaknesses of the natural world. Instead, we have been given a new nature—one that is empowered by the Holy Spirit and able to live according to God’s will.

Romans 8:9 reminds us, “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.” This means that as spirit beings, we are no longer bound by the sinful nature of our flesh. We have been transformed from the inside out, and the Spirit of God now resides in us, guiding us into all truth and empowering us to live righteously.

Living as a Spirit Being

Living as a spirit being requires a shift in perspective. We must learn to see ourselves not just as physical beings but as those who are deeply connected to God’s Spirit. This change in identity affects how we think, how we act, and how we relate to the world around us.

1. Walking in the Spirit

Galatians 5:16 gives us clear guidance on how to live as spirit beings: “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Walking in the Spirit means allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us in every aspect of our lives. It’s a daily choice to surrender our desires and decisions to God, trusting that His ways are higher and better than our own. When we walk in the Spirit, we experience freedom from the limitations of the flesh, and we are able to live in a way that honors God.

2. Renewing Your Mind

As spirit beings, we must continually renew our minds to align with the truth of our new identity. Romans 12:2 urges us to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” This transformation happens as we meditate on God’s Word, allowing it to shape our thoughts and guide our actions. When we focus on spiritual truths rather than the distractions of the physical world, we gain clarity and wisdom, enabling us to live out our purpose with confidence.

3. Living with Eternal Perspective

Understanding that we are spirit beings also means recognizing that our lives are not limited to this physical world. Colossians 3:2 encourages us to “set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” As spirit beings, our ultimate destination is eternity with God, and this reality should influence how we live each day. Instead of being consumed by temporary concerns, we can live with an eternal perspective, focusing on what truly matters—our relationship with God and the fulfillment of His will in our lives.

The Power of the Spirit Within

Living as a spirit being is not something we do in our own strength. The Holy Spirit, who now dwells within us, empowers us to live according to our new nature. Ephesians 3:16 reminds us that we are “strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man.” The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in us, giving us the power to overcome sin, to walk in holiness, and to fulfill God’s calling on our lives.

Conclusion

As born-again believers, we are spirit beings, no longer limited by the physical world or the weaknesses of the flesh. We have been born of the Spirit, and this new identity empowers us to live in alignment with God’s will. By walking in the Spirit, renewing our minds, and living with an eternal perspective, we can fully embrace the life God has called us to live.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for making me a spirit being through the new birth in Christ. Help me to walk in the Spirit, renew my mind, and live with an eternal perspective. Empower me to live according to Your will and to reflect Your glory in everything I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
