In the final moments of His earthly ministry, Jesus gave His disciples a powerful mandate that has echoed through the ages. Known as the Great Commission, found in Matthew 28:18-20 and Mark 16:15-20, this instruction is a call to action for all believers, urging us to spread the Gospel and make disciples of all nations.

Today’s Scriptures:

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'” – Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)

“He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.’ After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.” – Mark 16:15-20 (NIV)

Embracing the Commission

Jesus’ instruction to go and make disciples is a clear call to action. This commission is not just for the original disciples but for all who follow Christ, urging us to be proactive in sharing our faith.

Steps to Embrace Jesus’ Instruction:

  1. Recognize Jesus’ Authority:
Jesus begins the Great Commission by affirming His authority over heaven and earth. Recognizing His supreme authority gives us the confidence to go forth in His name, knowing that we are backed by the power of the Almighty.
  2. Go and Make Disciples:
The instruction to “go” implies action. We are called to step out of our comfort zones and engage with the world. Making disciples involves sharing the Gospel, teaching, and mentoring others in their faith journey.
  3. Baptize in the Name of the Trinity:
Baptism is a public declaration of faith and a critical step in the discipleship process. Jesus instructs us to baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, symbolizing the new life and commitment to Christ.
  4. Teach Obedience to His Commands:
Teaching others to obey Jesus’ commands is essential. This involves not just imparting knowledge but also modeling a life of obedience and faithfulness to God’s word.
  5. Trust in His Presence:
Jesus promises to be with us always, providing assurance and strength as we carry out His commission. This constant presence empowers us to face challenges and obstacles with confidence.

Living the Commission

Living out the Great Commission means integrating these principles into our daily lives. By actively engaging in discipleship, we fulfill Jesus’ mandate and contribute to the growth of God’s Kingdom.

Conclusion and Prayer

The Great Commission is a powerful call to action that remains relevant for believers today. As we embrace Jesus’ instruction, may we do so with confidence, commitment, and a deep sense of purpose.

Dear Lord, thank You for the Great Commission. Help us to embrace Your instruction with courage and dedication. Empower us to make disciples, teach obedience, and trust in Your constant presence. May our efforts bring glory to Your name and expand Your Kingdom. Amen.
