In a world where societal norms and popular figures often shape our behaviors and values, the call to be imitators of God rather than men is more crucial than ever. The Apostle Paul’s exhortation in Ephesians 5:1-7 reminds us to live as children of light, following God’s example in all we do.

Today’s Scripture:

“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them.” – Ephesians 5:1-7 (NIV)

The Call to Follow God’s Example

Paul urges believers to imitate God by walking in love, just as Christ demonstrated through His sacrificial love. This means rejecting behaviors and influences that are contrary to God’s nature and embracing a life of purity, gratitude, and holiness.

Rejecting Worldly Influences

  1. Walk in Love: Just as Christ’s love is selfless and sacrificial, we are called to love others genuinely and sacrificially. John 13:34-35 tells us that by loving one another, we demonstrate that we are His disciples.
  2. Pursue Purity: Avoid behaviors that lead to sexual immorality, impurity, and greed. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 instructs us to live in holiness and honor, not in passionate lust like those who do not know God.
  3. Cultivate Thanksgiving: Replace obscenity, foolish talk, and coarse joking with words of thanksgiving. Colossians 3:17 encourages us to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Steps to Imitate God

  1. Reflect on Christ’s Example: Regularly study the life of Jesus and His teachings to understand how to live in a way that pleases God. Philippians 2:5 encourages us to have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.
  2. Seek God’s Guidance: Pray for the Holy Spirit to help you discern and reject worldly influences. Romans 12:2 advises us not to conform to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.
  3. Engage in Christian Community: Surround yourself with believers who encourage and support your walk with God. Hebrews 10:24-25 highlights the importance of meeting together and encouraging one another.

Living as Children of Light

Paul’s message in Ephesians 5:1-7 is a call to live as children of light, reflecting God’s character in our daily lives. By rejecting worldly influences and imitating God, we can navigate the challenges of this world with integrity and faithfulness.

Conclusion and Prayer

Ephesians 5:1-7 challenges us to be imitators of God, rejecting the doctrines and influences of the world. By walking in love, pursuing purity, and cultivating thanksgiving, we reflect God’s light in a dark world.

Heavenly Father, help us to imitate You in all we do. Grant us the strength to reject worldly influences and to live as children of light, reflecting Your love and holiness in our lives. Amen.
